Artistic Statement
As a costume designer, I rarely start my design process thinking about clothing. A costume is not just the clothes on a person’s back, it is a visual history of the character which acts as a bold statement about both who they are and how they fit into the world onstage. I like to think of a costume as a vessel used by the actor to tell a story. I strive to create costumes that speak for the “why” in theatre as in, why are we telling this story now? The answer to that question will inevitably change with every production, but no matter what the costumes I create aim to nurture the spirit of the play and collaborative vision of the show.
