The Center in Motion

University at Buffalo Department of Theatre and Dance, Buffalo NY 2021

Lighting Designer, Projection Designer, Props Master, Assistant Set Designer

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University at Buffalo Department of Theatre and Dance was unable to produce live performances during the 2020-2021 academic year. The Center in Motion: A Virtual Dance Concert consisted of a series of recorded dances from a series of choreographers and designers that were complied for public viewing.

I was fortunate enough to be able to design for several pieces throughout this process. In addition, I played a primary role in constructing and painting many of the scenic elements used in production.

Teem - Lighting Designer

All things do work. This is what connects people to plants to animals to insects to people. Teem is a piece that captures the elements of work in both the natural and the industrial. My lighting design utilized the geometric nature of the scenic elements to create shadowed environments that illustrated the grind of an industrial commute while a warm contrasting color palette created the feeling of bees pollinating on a lazy summer day. Work is what connects us. We are the work we do.

Note: Design was created through the use of a rep plot.

When the Light Shines Through - Projections Designer

The projection art for this piece is meant to create a rich environment for the dancer that represents the story of struggling with and eventually accepting depression and anxiety. The images displayed were inspired by the organic shape of a raging storm and the various stages of its eventual dissipation. As the dancer becomes more connected to the light and dark parts of herself the storm inside herself also begins to transform from something overwhelming to a mitigated sense of peace.
