Concept Statement

Ashgirl is a complex story that explores the idea that to some extent sin, sadness, and love, are all on some level, choices. Even though the inspiration for this script is Cinderella, it reads completely differently from the more mainstream interpretations of the fairytale because of the elements of darkness and lyricism in the storytelling. The addition of the seven deadly sins physically represents the suffocating nature of human flaws and desires – and how inescapable they sometimes seem. in the reality of this world, the only time the sins have power is when someone is willing to let them in and listen otherwise, they act as a mere onlooker, only a suggestion of a potential sin to come. Love in this story isn’t defined by the fit of a shoe, but by mutual respect and adoration that can only be earned over time. Ashgirl is both an incredibly tender and strong protagonist who acts as a malleable representation of any person who has ever experienced pain, loss, or devastation.
